The Complete Tuft and Needle Review

If you are in a hurry, skip to the summary of key points at the bottom of this page. But it’s better to read the complete review to get a clear picture of this mattress.

The Tuft and Needle bed is a simple, affordable mattress that most kinds of sleepers can enjoy. It is made of quality memory foam that is very supportive without too many complicated extras.

Foam Layers of Comfort That Keep You Cool at Night

The Tuft and Needle mattress is built from two layers of foam and little else. The top layer of the mattress gives the bed most of its soft cushioning effect. It also provides a certain degree of cooling and support.

For a thin 3” layer, it does a pretty good job of seamlessly transferring the weight of the sleeper onto the denser foam foundation. This foundational layer below is thicker (7”), but provides better support and gives the mattress its shape.

The foam itself is made of polyurethane, but appears to have special properties. According to Tuft and Needle, it is adaptive foam, which they developed based on customer feedback.

What this means is that the foam is more responsive than normal memory foam. It will “react” based on how much pressure you place on it. This makes it more bouncy than regular memory foam, but not as much as a latex bed.

These foam layers are wrapped in a clean-looking, white outer cover. The cover is very thin, so don’t expect any extra padding; however, this also makes it more breathable.

It is made of a very soft polyester blend and is not machine washable, though it can be cleaned in other ways. Tuft and Needle doesn’t recommend removing it entirely, since it exposes important layers beneath.

The mattress is about a 6.5 out of 10 in terms of firmness, which is just about what you would usually expect from similar mattresses on the market. If you’re a side sleeper or a back sleeper, this is definitely firm enough for you.

For stomach sleepers it will vary, but most will probably find it firm enough. If you prefer a mattress that isn’t so hard, a foam pillow top can easily take the edge off.

When it comes to heat retention, the Tuft and Needle sleeps reasonably cool, especially for a foam mattress. Because the top layer of the mattress is infused with graphite and cooling gel, the heat gets carried away and dispersed pretty well.

Another feature that helps keep the mattress cool is the breathability of the cover and foam. The fact that the mattress doesn’t sink too deeply when you lie down also saves you from getting too overheated.

The Tuft and Needle mattress is comfortable on a variety of surfaces. According to the company itself, it works just fine on a box spring, a slatted frame, or even an adjustable bed.

If you want to add some extra comfort, Tuft and Needle offers some nice accessories. Their foam pillows are high quality and make a good complement to the mattress, as do the sheets.

A Long Trial With a Great Guarantee

Though Tuft and Needle does offer a trial period and guarantee, they claim that only less than 5% of their customers ever make use of it and the vast majority of customers keep the mattress. Either way, the trial is generous, allowing you to sleep on the bed risk-free for 100 nights.

If you don’t love the bed, then you can simply send it back within that time frame. They have a hassle-free return policy, which means that you won’t have to pay any shipping and they will come by to take the mattress off your hands.

A Surprisingly High-Quality Mattress for the Price

Tuft and Needle is a reputable company that has sold over 500,000 mattresses and has high customer satisfaction overall. Though their mattress is simple, they put a lot of thought into the design.

It has many high-quality features that are proprietary to Tuft and Needle, such as their adaptive foam technology.

The materials of the mattress are UL Greenguard Certified and they emit very low levels of gas, contain few pollutants, and won’t cause respiratory issues for users. The foam is also CertiPUR-US certified, so it is an environmentally-friendly mattress with no harmful substances.

The mattress’ outer layers are free from the usual fire retardant chemicals. Instead, they use a special fire resistant “sock” to keep your bed safe from flames.

Tuft and Needle beds are made in the US—in California, to be exact—so you can expect high-quality manufacturing standards.

Customers Love the Soft, Supportive Foam

Reviews of the Tuft and Needle mattress are generally very positive. Customers find that the mattress is supportive, while still soft and comfortable. Many users comment that the bed is unusually affordable for the quality and that the customer service was top notch.

Others say that the bed has given them the best sleep that they’ve had in years, relieving back aches and pains that lower quality mattresses caused them.

A lot of people found the mattress to be quite firm, but this was a positive quality for most of them because of the reduced sinkage and enhanced back alignment.

For most customers, the mattress arrived quickly and conveniently. Shipping is free, and the mattress slides easily from the box that it’s compressed in.

Within a few hours of taking on air, it is well-formed and ready to be slept on. Few customers report any off-gassing, and what little there is dissipates fairly quickly.

The Tuft and Needle mattress offers the comfort of memory foam with few of the downsides. It sleeps relatively cool compared to traditional foam beds and it offers more bounce thanks to its responsive materials. It’s also made of high-quality foam that doesn’t contain toxins that harm the environment or people.

Though the design is simple, it offers a soft, cozy sleeping experience with enough support to keep your back straight all night. Thanks to its solid build, there is no sinking or “hammock” effect as well as no pressure points.

Overall, the Tuft and Needle comes highly recommended to anyone looking for a more affordable alternative to classic foam mattresses. If someone you know is considering making the transition from spring mattress to foam, then this bed will serve as a great introduction.
