Brooklyn Bedding Aurora - Overpriced or Real Luxury?

Review by Andy David
Mattress expert Updated Jan 2020

  • Brooklyn Aurora is competitively priced compared to quality in-store brands. But $1,699 for queen-size is expensive for the level of luxury. Brooklyn Signature is better value and similar quality for $949.
  • The mattress is best for back and side sleepers of all body weights. There is a good mix of back support and pressure relief. Heavy and average weight sleepers find the plush top layer too soft for stomach sleeping.
  • Aurora is one of the best memory foam hybrids on the market for cooling. A phase change material cover feels cool and wicks away sweat. The hybrid design has good airflow and prevents trapped heat.

Is Aurora overpriced for a luxury mattress-in-a-box?

Aurora has quality USA construction that is superior to many online mattress brands. It is also more affordable than similar in-store brands. But $1,699 for queen-size is overpriced compared to alternatives.

Similar quality, better value options exist like Brooklyn Signature and Purple Hybrid. Brooklyn Signature in queen-size costs $949 – a significant saving over Aurora. The quality and durability is similar yet the price is far more affordable.

Who is the mattress best for?

  • Back Sleepers – Aurora’s hybrid design works well for back sleepers. The mattress provides good lumbar support to prevent lower back pain. 8-inch pocket coils keep back sleepers of different body weights afloat on the bed.
  • Side SleepersSide sleepers will like the plush, cushion-like feel of the top layer. This provides great pressure relief for the hips and shoulders. The hybrid construction keeps the spine aligned to minimize back pain.
  • Hot Sleepers – The mattress has great airflow and advanced cooling features. Including a phase change material cover and copper-infused foam. Aurora is one of the coolest memory foam hybrids on the market.
  • CouplesCouples will enjoy Aurora’s good durability and support. There is plenty of response and bounce for sexually active couples. The motion isolation is also good for couples who toss and turn.

Who should avoid this mattress?

  • Budget Shoppers – Aurora is a high-quality mattress-in-a-box. But at $1,699 for queen-size it is too expensive for budget shoppers. Brooklyn Signature is similar quality yet more affordable at $949 for queen-size.
  • Stomach Sleepers – The top layer is too plush for many stomach sleepers. Most people prefer a firmer feel like on Purple Hybrid or Brooklyn Signature. Lightweight stomach sleepers will be okay (but supportive, more affordable options like Nectar exist).
  • People Who Like Classic Foam – People who like materials to “hug” the body will find Aurora too bouncy. There is lots of response due to the pocket coils. There is some contouring but the mattress lacks the classic “hugging” feel.
  • People Who Like Firm Mattresses – The mattress comes in 3 firmness options (soft, medium, and firm). But the plush top feels too soft for people who like firm beds. Brooklyn Signature feels more solid in the firm option.
  • Heavy People – Aurora can support most larger people with its 13-inch height. But the mattress feels too soft for most heavy weight sleepers. Some heavy side sleepers will enjoy the plush pressure relief.

  • Aurora is a mattress specially designed for cooling. It is one of the coolest memory foam hybrids on the market. People who sleep hot will find the bed stops overheating and sweating.
  • The hybrid design ensures plenty of airflow. This stops heat from getting trapped between the layers. Copper-infused memory foam draws heat away from the body to give extra cooling.
  • The mattress has a phase change material cover. This feels cool to the touch and absorbs body heat. Adding sheets or a mattress protector will reduce some of the cooling benefits of the cover.

Back & Joint Pain

  • Side sleepers get great pressure relief with the plush top layer. This gently cushions the joints to relieve aches and pains. Side sleepers with hip, elbow, and shoulder pain benefit from Aurora.
  • Back pain sufferers get good body alignment, especially on their back and side. This keeps the spine in a neutral position to prevent backache. The mattress also contours well to the lumbar region to minimize lower back pain.
  • Aurora’s medium firmness option is the most popular. But it has a soft, cushion-like feel that some people dislike. Brooklyn Signature is a quality, affordable option for back pain sufferers who like a firmer feel.

  • The mattress comes in 3 firmness options (soft, medium, and firm). This gives couples with different body weights plenty of choices. Medium firmness is the most popular and the best compromise for couples.
  • The hybrid design prevents sagging and keeps couples afloat. There is plenty of bounce and response for sex. The proprietary foam materials are easy to move around on so there is no “stuck in the mud” feel.
  • Couples enjoy good motion isolation on Aurora. Pocket coils and foams isolate motion transfer across the mattress surface. People who toss and turn can switch positions without disturbing their partner.
  • With its hybrid design, Aurora has decent edge support. Pocket coils allow couples to sleep near the edge and still feel supported. This also makes the mattress feel bigger.

Heavy People

  • Aurora has a 450 lbs weight limit on both sides of the bed (queen-size and above). The mattress is high-quality, durable, and made in the USA. But most heavy back and stomach sleepers will prefer firmer mattresses like Brooklyn Signature.
  • Heavy side sleepers get the best comfort on Aurora. The hybrid design keeps the spine aligned to prevent back pain. The plush top layer works well to relieve pressure in the hips and shoulders.
  • The mattress is good for heavy people who overheat at night. Aurora has great airflow to keep heavy weight sleepers cool. The phase change material cover is cool to the touch and effective at wicking away sweat.

Brooklyn Signature is cheaper and better value than Brooklyn Aurora. But Aurora has superior cooling and a plusher feel.

Better Value – Brooklyn Signature is more affordable than Aurora at $949 for queen-size. Aurora retails at $1,699 for queen-size. Both mattresses are good quality but Brooklyn Signature is better value for the price.

Better For Heavy People – Brooklyn Signature is better for heavy back and stomach sleepers. The firmer support keeps the hips and abdomen of heavy people afloat. This helps to minimize lower back and neck pain.

Less Cooling Features – Aurora has more cooling features than Brooklyn Signature. This includes a phase change material cover and copper-infused foam. Brooklyn Signature’s gel memory foam prevents trapped heat but there is no cooling cover.

Purple Hybrid has better cooling and is slightly more affordable than Aurora. But Aurora’s classic hybrid feel will appeal to more people.

Unique Feel – Purple Hybrid has a unique feel that is not comfortable for everyone. Aurora’s classic hybrid design is easier to adapt to. Both mattresses come with a risk-free trial so shoppers can test the feel for themselves.

Better For Stomach SleepersStomach sleepers will prefer the firmer feel of Purple Hybrid. Aurora has a plush top layer that is too soft for average and heavy stomach sleepers. Both options are suitable for lightweight stomach sleepers.

Better Cooling – Purple Hybrid sleeps cooler than Aurora. The Purple Grid comfort layer has better airflow than foam material. But both mattresses have decent cooling to satisfy most types of sleepers.

Less Durability – The long-term durability of the Purple Grid layer is questionable. Some customer reports say that the material breaks down and sags over time. Aurora is a better option for people who are concerned about durability.

Not As Thick – Aurora’s 13-inch thickness gives better support for heavy people. Purple Hybrid is 11 inches in height. But both have similar-sized pocket coils that give great back support for different body weights.

More Affordable – Purple Hybrid is more affordable than Aurora. It retails at $1,499 for queen-size while Aurora costs $1,699 for queen-size. A better value, good quality alternative is Brooklyn Signature.

Shorter Trial & Warranty – Purple Hybrid comes with a 100-night risk-free trial and a 10-year warranty. Aurora has a 120-night risk-free trial and a 10-year warranty. Both mattress brands allow plenty of time to test out the level of comfort.

DreamCloud is more affordable than Aurora and has a long trial and warranty. But Aurora has better cooling and durability, and comes in more firmness options.

Made In China – Aurora is made in the USA and DreamCloud is made in China. Aurora has a premium feel and great durability. DreamCloud is made from cheaper materials that lack durability over the long-term.

More Affordable – DreamCloud is significantly cheaper than Aurora at $999 for queen-size. But the mattress does not have Aurora’s high-end, luxury feel. Shoppers on a budget can get good durability and value with Brooklyn Signature.

Single Firmness – DreamCloud’s medium-firm feel is best for back and stomach sleepers. Aurora is available in soft, medium, and firm options. This makes Aurora more suitable for different body weights and sleeping styles.

Thicker – DreamCloud is one of the tallest mattress-in-a-box brands. Medium firmness and the 15-inch height makes it good for heavy back and side sleepers. Aurora is thinner at 13 inches but still provides great support for all body weights.

Sleeps Hotter – Aurora has better cooling features than DreamCloud. This includes a phase change material cover and copper-infused foam. DreamCloud’s hybrid design gives decent airflow but the foam layers can still trap heat.

Longer Trial & Warranty – Aurora comes with a 120-night risk-free trial and 10-year warranty. DreamCloud has a 365-night risk-free trial and lifetime warranty. But both give enough time to fully test the mattress.

Shoppers wanting a good quality hybrid with a plush top should consider Aurora. It has a high-quality, luxury feel and supports most body weights. But other brands are better value for the price.

Key reasons to buy and not buy:

Good Cooling Mattress – The mattress is great for cooling. It features advanced technology to keep sleepers cool on warm nights.

Luxury Mattress-In-A-Box – Aurora provides greater luxury and durability than most mattress-in-a-box brands. The high price reflects good quality, USA-made construction.

Possibly Overpriced – Shoppers can get better value by choosing other online brands. Quality, more affordable alternatives like Brooklyn Signature and Purple Hybrid are worth considering.
